SK Hynix: Memory Becomes AI’s Bottleneck
A Critical AI Infrastructure Player
SK Hynix is one of the world’s leading memory semiconductor companies and a key supplier of High Bandwidth Memory, or HBM, which has become essential to AI accelerators. In the second quarter of 2026, the company delivered record results, with revenue of 79.3 trillion won and operating profit of 60.5 trillion won.
Structurally Strong AI Demand
The real attraction lies in the combination of technological leadership and scarcity. SK Hynix has begun mass shipments of HBM4 and secured long-term agreements with major customers. Demand continues to be driven by the rapid expansion of AI infrastructure, while HBM supply remains constrained.
This gives SK Hynix exposure not only to rising volumes, but also to a significantly more profitable product mix. Its $4 billion US investment to expand HBM4E production and packaging capacity underlines management’s confidence that demand for advanced AI memory will remain strong well beyond the current cycle.
Direct Exposure to the AI Cycle
For investors, SK Hynix offers one of the most direct exposures to the semiconductor infrastructure behind AI. The key risk remains cyclical, as memory pricing and semiconductor valuations can move sharply.
But as long as AI investment grows faster than memory supply, SK Hynix remains exceptionally well positioned. The investment case is increasingly about scarcity: in the AI infrastructure race, computing power may get most of the attention, but memory is becoming just as critical.
