Prosus: Another Road to Tech Growth

Prosus is an Amsterdam listed technology investment group, controlled by South Africa’s Naspers. Its main asset is a large stake in Tencent, the Chinese gaming, social media and payments giant. It also owns and operates businesses in online food delivery, classifieds, payments and education across emerging markets.

Analysis: present situation

The shares rose on Friday. Exposure to Asian internet platforms offers a different route to technology growth, outside the concentrated US AI trade. For years, Prosus traded at a large discount to the value of its holdings; management has responded with a continuous buyback programme financed by selling small portions of the Tencent stake.

Opportunity analysis

The buyback mechanism gradually narrows the holding discount and increases each shareholder’s look through stake in Tencent. Tencent itself benefits from AI applications in gaming, advertising and cloud. Prosus’ own operating businesses are moving toward profitability, which could support a re rating of the group beyond its role as a Tencent proxy.

Investor outlook: positive, with China risk

The underlying event is the search for diversification away from US technology concentration, toward platforms serving billions of users in Asia and emerging markets. Chinese regulation and geopolitical tension remain the key risks. For investors, Prosus offers discounted access to Asian digital growth with a built in value unlocking mechanism.
