Crypto, a summer shaped by stablecoins

Bitcoin has remained surprisingly static since early July, stuck around 65,000 dollars despite modest week-to-week fluctuations. After falling 2.82 % last week, it has gained 2.64 % since Monday, keeping it broadly flat over the period. This inertia contrasts sharply with the growing activity in the stablecoin segment, where announcements are multiplying and attracting institutional attention. OUSD, a stablecoin co-built with more than 140 major U.S. financial institutions, set the tone. This week, Circle announced the creation of a dedicated blockchain for its USDC stablecoin, backed by heavyweight partners such as Visa, Mastercard and BlackRock. Institutions appear to be sidelining bitcoin and traditional cryptos this summer to focus on the “crypto-dollar,” which could make stablecoins the true winners of summer 2026.

Among other major cryptocurrencies, the situation remains equally calm. Ether trades around 1,920 dollars, up 2 %, while Solana holds steady near 73 dollars. Binance Coin is also stable at 591 dollars. This lack of significant movement reflects a market in waiting mode, where investors monitor macroeconomic signals and institutional initiatives to anticipate the next catalyst. The contrast between the stagnation of major cryptos and the dynamism of stablecoins highlights a shift in the crypto landscape, where the search for stability and integration into traditional financial infrastructures is increasingly overshadowing pure speculation.

For investors, this trend raises a key question: are we witnessing a lasting reallocation of flows toward stablecoins, or is this a temporary phenomenon driven by institutional announcements? The rise of OUSD and USDC’s dedicated blockchain suggests that financial players are working to build dollar-backed solutions capable of integrating into payment systems and banking infrastructures. If this trend continues, stablecoins could become a cornerstone of digital finance, relegating bitcoin to a more speculative or store-of-value role. In a market where volatility remains contained and institutional innovation is accelerating, investors will need to closely monitor the evolution of these emerging standards to identify long-term opportunities.
