The safety of short-term investments comes at a cost; as for now, with the rate of inflation relatively high and real interest low, investors parking their assets in cash lose about 3% to 4% annually. Investing with a short-term objective limits the type of investments one may have; often it is limited to hording cash in a current account and money market funds which invest their assets with due dates under one year.
Given the present circumstances, we expect interest rates to stay below the long-term average for a prolonged period.
