OpenAI is a nonprofit research firm that operates under an open-source type of model to allow other institutions and researchers to freely collaborate, making its patents and research open to the public. It is an American artificial intelligence (AI) research organization consisting of the non-profit OpenAI, Inc. registered in Delaware, and its for-profit subsidiary OpenAI Global, LLC. Despite its significant presence in the AI arena, OpenAI has not held an initial public offering (IPO) to offer shares publicly. It remains a privately held entity, primarily owned by founders, investors, and employees.

The founders say they are motivated in part by concerns about existential risk from artificial general intelligence. ChatGPT is a recent part of OpenAI that allows users to generate text from poetry to short stories. However, despite OpenAI being nonprofit, ChatGPT is now its own for-profit company. OpenAI is a nonprofit research company with a mission to create artificial general intelligence, similar to human beings. OpenAI’s ChatGPT is an AI chatbot that has been trained to engage in human-like virtual interactions. With a focus on long-term research and transparency, OpenAI aims to advance AGI safely and responsibly. The company’s sponsors have included Amazon, Microsoft, Elon Musk and Reid Hoffman.
